Ungaretti, Giuseppe
► (1888-1970) Poeta y crítico italiano. Autor de una poesía humanista y personal: Sentimiento del tiempo (1933), El dolor (1947), La tierra prometida (1950), etc. En todas ellas, pero en esp. en la primera, se manifiesta la preocupación del poeta por la posición del ser humano ante el sentimiento de infinitud espacial y temporal.

Poeta ítalo-egipcio. Vivió en Alejandría hasta los 24 años, de ahí que las regiones desérticas de Egipto sean imágenes recurrentes en su obra. Mientras estudiaba en París, se entregó a la poderosa influencia de los poetas del movimiento simbolista. Fue el fundador del hermetismo, al que dio inicio con El puerto sepultado (1916), obra que llevaría a la reorientación de la poesía italiana moderna. Aunque experimental, su poesía se desarrolló de una manera coherente en la obra Allegria di naufragi (1919) [Alegría de naufragios], así como en sus poemarios posteriores. Después de la segunda guerra mundial su poesía se volvió más estructurada y adquirió un tono más franco.
